Photographic Art Practice

My art aims to explore people’s relationships with the rural landscape and incorporates the science of natural history alongside the romance of folklore.

I fuse traditional, slow photography with modern digital methods, producing work which is both representational and expressively tactile. The images (framed and mounted photographs, cyanotypes, anthotypes and mixed media pieces) often feature treasured native plants and animals.

Having a particular interest in art history I am fascinated by how that has directly shaped modern popular photography trends in a way that is not widely acknowledged. My artistic practice aims to explore how (and if) new interpretations of the landscape may be achieved visually.

During my commercial work in the field of conservation, I find an interesting friction occurs between the desire for a landscape to look a particular way (arguably based on paintings from hundreds of years ago) and a need for reality and biodiversity. It is my belief that Landscape Photography could be pivotal in reframing the expectation of how the British countryside should look and, by depicting things differently, support environmental change that aims for truly healthy and abundant natural spaces.

I sell my work at local markets and I run workshops so others can experiment with this type of fun and creative analog photography.
